At yesterday’s liturgy, marking the third Sunday of Advent, or “joyful Sunday” our pastor, Father John Blum made some interesting remarks about St. John the Baptist.
Speaking from the pulpit at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in St. Pete Beach, FL. Father Blum shared that if there could be an “unofficial patron saint of Advent” it would be this remarkable man.
When asked by the priests and Levites “who are you?” John replied, “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord.” ( John 1:23) John speaks also of humility by adding, ” the one who is coming after me, I am not worthy to untie His sandal strap.” Father Blum shared that St. John the Baptist knew who he was and who he was not. In today’s culture, the virtue of humility seems lost at times. The Baptist’s words “I must decrease, He must increase” give us an opportunity this Advent to reflect on who we are, and who we are not, and of our need for a Saviour.
