On September 8th, Catholics around the world celebrate the birth of the Virgin Mary.
On this particular day, this past Sunday, my husband treated me to a visit to the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL.
We were fascinated with the circus history and lives of John and Mable Ringling who wintered on this beautiful estate located on Sarasota Bay. Their vast collection of artwork, a passion of the late John Ringling, is housed in an expansive museum, with collections from Renaissance artists.
We were drawn to the painting of the “Blue Madonna.”
This is the painting of the Virgin Mary by Italian artist Carlo Dolci.
The light coming from Mary’s face against the striking blue veil, draws one to this beautiful oil painting. We stood in front of Her, whispering a prayer.
Dolci considered his paintings an offering to God, even writing prayers on the back of some of his works.
I was thankful for the gift of this “Blue Madonna” on Her birthday.
