“In The Shadow of Our Lady,” St. Teresa of Calcutta walks with Mary

Fr. Joseph Langford, M.I.C. and St. Mother Teresa

In his book, “In The Shadow of Our Lady,” Fr. Joseph Langford writes,

“Mother Teresa lived with her heart in the heavens and her hands buried in the worst this world could offer. She managed not only to live at both poles of this soul-stretching axis, but to wed them, to make them one in Christ, such that Calcutta became a gateway to Jerusalem. She worked this miracle not only in herself, but in all those she touched.”

Inspired by this beautiful book on St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s unique relationship with the Blessed Mother, I was inspired to write a song with the same title. Several years ago, I wanted to write to Fr. Langford, to thank him for such an insightful book, but found he had died recently. With the release of my new CD, ” A Gift for Our Lady”, I included the song, “In the Shadow of Our Lady” and dedicated it to both St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Fr. Joseph Langford, co-founder of the Missionary of Charity Fathers.

Fr. Langford writes, “As it was for Mother Teresa, so it can be for the rest of us. By standing close to Our Lady we can find the grace and courage to overcome our own personal trials and crosses. Summon the same powerful presence and aid of Our Lady by following the example of Mother Teresa. From dawn to dusk, decade to decade, Mother Teresa’s life had been spent, in every sense of the word, in the shadow of Our Lady. Our Lady helps us, as Mother Teresa found in her vision, to become contemplatives at the foot of the cross–to discover God’s presence and love, even in the midst of our trials and dark nights.

Song, “In The Shadow of Our Lady”

In the shadow of Our Lady, I walked close behind,

Never knowing where the path would lead,

I held Her hand in mine.

In the poor, I saw His face

In every street, and darkened place,

My Jesus was thirsting for souls,

And because our Lady led, I could follow

In the shadow of Our Lady, I walked close behind

Never knowing where the path would lead,

I held Her hand in mine

The fire within me burning bright

I heard His words, “Come be My Light”

My Jesus was thirsting for souls,

And because Our Lady led, I could follow

In the shadow of our Lady….

Come be My Light in the darkness…

Transforming night into day

Be my strength to the weary..

Burning brightly to illumine their way.

In the shadow of our Lady, I walked close behind,

Never knowing where the path would lead,

I held Her hand in mine

In the shadow of our Lady… in the shadow of our Lady…

Spread the love
