After some ministry work in Anaheim, CA. my husband and I took a vacation along the coastline of CA. I have always loved reading about the Missions established by St. Junipero Serra, but had only visited one, the Mission Santa Barbara, a few years ago.
We had some extra time this trip and decided on the way back to the airport in Orange Co. to take highway 101. We visited the Mission Carmel, where St. Junipero lived and had his base. We visited St. Ynez Mission in Solvang, CA. where we walked into vibrant praise and worship music by the locals during Eucharistic Adoration and prayer.
The next Mission we visited was Soledad Mission, which is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. The Mission has a small museum, and is right off Hwy. 101 and definitely worth the visit. The next Mission just south of Soledad Mission, or a day’s ride on horseback, as St. Serra traveled, is San Miguel Mission.
If you get the opportunity to visit CA. the Missions, and the life and work of St. Junipero Serra is fascinating.
